We are honored to have Colonel Jay Brewer, Class of 1981, as our Muster speaker. If you are not initially familiar with Col Brewer, I am sure you have heard his voice at Kyle Field over the years. He was the voice announcer for the Aggie Band who certainly made famous the phrase…”Now forming at the North end of Kyle Field, the nationally famous Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band!”
Colonel Brewer entered Texas A&M University as a freshman in the Fall of 1977 and was a member of the Corps of Cadets and Texas Aggie Band. He earned his degree in Mechanized Agriculture and was offered a job with the John Deere company at the end of his senior year. However, on the day of graduation Colonel Joe T. Haney asked him to join the Aggie Band staff. Well as fate would have it, that would be the beginning of a 40 year career with the Aggie Band. He studied music at Sam Houston State University, and later received his Master of Music Education degree from the VanderCook College of Music in Chicago. During his tenure with the Aggie Band, he was awarded the John J. Koldus award for ourstanding service to Texas A&M University. A stone pillar was named in his honor at the Dunlap Aggie Band Drill Field in 2018. He was honored to have served 36 years in the Texas State Guard, and upon his retirement from the Guard in 2017, he was appointed to the Honorary Reserve. He retired from Texas A&M after having served as one of the Band Directors, and the voice of the famous organization from 1981-2021. Colonel Brewer is married to Judy Brewer ’85 and has two children, James and Natalie.
